Five Ways to Make Your Home More Energy Efficient

Mother-Daughter duo receive new roof in time for Mother’s Day

Thanks to funding from Habitat Michigan in conjunction with Consumers Energy and MSHDA, and the quality work of GoTo Roofing, Habitat for Humanity of Huron Valley was able to replace the roof of a multi-generation family home in Superior Charter Township.

Pauline purchased her Superior Charter Township home in 1989. She paid off her 30-year mortgage in just 11 years and raised her three children, including Nita, in the family home. The house has always been home to many generations, including Pauline’s mother Dotty, who moved into an addition built in 1992. But, maintaining an aging house can be expensive, and Pauline was never able to replace her deteriorating roof.

Nita and Pauline both described their new roof as beautiful. The roof was one part of many home repairs currently being undertaken in an effort to get the home in good shape to allow Nita to move back into her childhood home with her mother.

“Habitat has helped us to move forward,” Nita said. “We just wanted to get home so bad.”

Nita said the house always makes her think of dogs and gardening. When she was a child, the house was home to various critters—cats, dogs, and birds—and she often gardened with Pauline in the backyard. She and her mother smiled while recalling Pauline’s consistent, but simple gardening advice to “Put it in the ground and see what happens!”
