NSK completes 4th home for Habitat
This summer, long-time sponsor NSK Americas, Inc. completed renovation work at a property on Holmes Road, soon to be picked by a Future Habitat Homeowner. In 15 build days, approximately 200 NSK employees completed more than 1,000 volunteer hours to renovate the project.
Since 2007, NSK Americas, Inc., a global supplier of roller bearings, ball bearings, linear motion and automotive components, has grown from a volunteer-only partner to a $40,000 community contributor with more than 200 committed volunteers each year and more than $163,000 in lifetime giving to Habitat for Humanity of Huron Valley.
Last year, NSK volunteers contributed 1,017 hours of work to help renovate a Habitat home for Nakesha Walker and her 2-year-old daughter, Nyla. Nakesha had lived in apartments for most of her life. Despite a college degree from Central Michigan University, Nakesha struggled to find work during the 2008 recession. Within a year, she found her saving grace with the birth of her daughter.
“Since her birth, she has pushed me to want better,” said Nakesha. “I saw no other options for someone like me with low income and fair credit… With the help of Habitat, home ownership has been a new goal I set for my daughter and me.”
With the help of community sponsors, such as NSK, Habitat is hoping to renovate or build 19 houses in Washtenaw County for local low-income families and individuals who are qualified and approved for the Habitat Home Ownership Program in fiscal year 2019. Through an affordable mortgage, local families and individuals save hundreds of dollars a month.
"NSK, I thank you for sponsoring the build of our home and working so hard each week to make it look as beautiful as it does today," Nakesha said at her home dedication. "You all really went above and beyond amazing and you get a huge thank you from Nyla and me."
