Habitat hosts Groundbreaking Ceremony for 3 Future Affordable Homes
In April 2024, Habitat for Humanity of Huron Valley hosted a Groundbreaking Ceremony at the Firwood Street lot, where three future Habitat homes will be newly constructed with the support of government partners, volunteers, and sponsors. The affordable housing projects are supported by the 2024 Women Build participants, 15 area congregations known as the Good News Group, the Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA), and more.
The event marked the first time HHHV will be building new homes in the Firwood area since 2008. From 2001 – 2008, HHHV provided 13 brand new affordable housing units in that area. To date, HHHV has built or renovated more than 275 homes in Washtenaw County.
The groundbreaking featured the importance of local partnerships and support, such as Women Build, Good News and MSHDA, to help HHHV still provide affordable housing for low- to mid-income families in today’s market and sustain neighborhood revitalization efforts.
This year, MSHDA is supporting one of these three homes as part of it’s Investing in Community Housing Program.
Women Build will bring more than 100 women and local sponsors together to fundraise and donate volunteer hours to support women empowerment. This year, over 100 women are working toward a fundraising goal of $75,000 and volunteering to help build one of the Firwood homes. Thank you to the the sponsors James A. & Faith Knight Foundation, Nichols Charitable Fund, PNC, Investors Realty Group, Delux Drapery & Shade, Ann Arbor Carpets & Flooring, E7 Solutions, Maria Wade Realtor and Tracey Roy Realtor, and all of the fundraising teams.
The third house will be supported by the Good News Group. Since 1997, roughly 15 area congregations have come together each year – pooling their resources to help fund and build homes in our community. Collectively, the congregations have helped house more than 38 families, and provide hundreds of volunteers and nearly $40,000 in donations each year to support our program.
