Meet the Buchanan Family

“My name is Erika Buchanan. I was born and raised in Muskegon, MI. I relocated to Ypsilanti after graduating high school. I’ve lived in Ypsilanti now for more than 30 years. I was raised in a home but when I moved here I didn’t think a house was in my reach due to the high cost of the housing market.

I’m so excited to embark on this journey of becoming a homeowner with Habitat. I currently live in a townhome, struggling to pay high rent, and living from check to check. This is the reason I reached out to Habitat for assistance in homeownership. Thank you to the Habitat board members for seeing my need and approving me to be a part of this program. I have a little anxiety about being a homeowner but I prayed to God to guide me in the right direction and he’s directing my path, my steps are altered by Him.

I have one child, her name is Nia, she’s 20 years old. She’s currently a sophomore at MSU with a major in Nursing and a career interest in forensics. I earned an Associate’s Degree at Washtenaw Community College. I currently work at the University of Michigan Hospital where I’ve been employed for 16 years. In addition to job stability; I feel so blessed to now have the stability of being a homeowner.

I’m most excited about the memories we will make in our new home. I love to cook, decorate and have family gatherings. I’m so blessed to have this opportunity and happy my daughter and I will have a place that we can call home.”
