Yvette Daniels joined Habitat for Humanity of Huron Valley’s Home Ownership Program at an unusual time - during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic. However, the excitement for her new Habitat home is evident in her infectious smile - and we can’t wait to welcome her home!

“Hello, my name is Yvette Daniels, and I was born and raised in Detroit. I have five sisters and six brothers. We grew up in a small house on the east side with a total of 14 people in a three-bedroom house.

“I decided to go to college and moved to Ypsilanti and graduated from Eastern Michigan University as well as Marygrove College in Detroit with my degree in education. Presently, I am a music teacher at Westfield Academy. I teach general music, band, orchestra and ukulele.

“Fun Facts: I like bowling, hanging with my family, friends, and my pet bird Flash

Most of my life I lived in an Apartment, Townhouse and Condo some not so safe. Tired of my situation I needed a change. Two of my friends have a Habitat home they encourage me to look into Habitat. So, I went to a meeting and started working with the Financial Coach getting my credit in order. It is time to stop paying rent and have my own investment. I have set goals in my life and one of them is owning MY own home. Fear was in my way just thinking about the responsibility of caring for a home. But thanks be to God whose has given us the victory. I have overcome that fear Based on God’s word “For God hath not given us the spirit of Fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind”. 2 Timothy 1:7. It is not God’s will for us to walk in fear.  I am looking forward to having one of my dreams coming true owning my own home. I walked in fear long enough now it is time. God said in His word. “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you”  Matthew 7:7. I thank God that the door has open through Habitat for Humanity. I also appreciate going through the Habitat Education Classes and the knowledge that I received, realizing I can handle having my own home.

“I want to thank Habitat for Humanity, Sponsors, Family, Friends, and Volunteers who’s helping to make my dream come true. I pray that God will continue to Bless you as you help others make their dreams come true.”

Yvette’s home is sponsored in 2020 by Thrivent and the Good News Group, which is a partnership of 16 area congregations who pool their resources together to help raise funds and build homes for Habitat. Since 1997, the Good News Group has helped 34 families achieve affordable homeownership.

This year, Thrivent partnered with the Good News Group to provide 50% of the home funding for the Good News & Thrivent Faith Builds program, challenging the congregations to raise the remaining 50 % of the home cost. Thrivent is the largest national partner of Habitat powered by faith and a passion to build stronger families, congregations and communities. Since 2005, thousands of Habitat home builds and repair projects have been completed by Thrivent members and other volunteers through the partnership.
